EMOTIONS ARE TEMPORARY COVENANT LOVE IS FOREVER

When individuals lead with their emotions without having a foundation of love that is strong as a covenant, committment is optional.  Decisions are then made that can hurt themselves, their team, and their families if they are not able to see and understand the entire picture. There is nothing wrong with getting emotional, there is nothing wrong with holding people accountable, but it is crucial to cultivate an environment where love is consistently demonstrated and genuinely felt, creating a safe space for personal and collective growth.

EXPECTATIONSEXPERIENCE

Mission & Vision

My Vision and Mission is to Help Connect People to Faith and Their Purpose Through Basketball

My role as a coach is to not primarily focus on basketball but to naturally touch players mentally and spiritually.  Athletes must figure out how to fight the every day battles of pressure needing to succeed, success and failure while also navigating how to handle social media and the pressures of earning and living up to NIL deals. Being a believer, I understand the power of faith and I understand how to speak faith without judging others for what they believe in.  The goal is to create mentally strong and spiritually resilient athletes who believe they can achieve anything regardless of what they believe is pushing them forward.

Role & Purpose

Most athletes don’t understand that roles are assignments that if embraced will help them achieve their goals.  Roles are not an immediate sign that you are not taking steps towards your goals BUT if not mastered or rejected can push you further from your goal.  Identifying purpose, Why, and clarifying how the role will help instead of stagnating growth are powerful to the acceptance and fulfilling of the role.  Understanding on both sides, focused execution with collaboration, and accountability are the tools required for athletes to get most out of their assignments even if it is not their preference.  The focus should be for the player to embrace the process with a vision that leads to a defined and tangible win that holds everyone accountable.  Questionable “whens” make it hard to define and visualize “wins”.

Athletes who are living within their purpose will never allow a role to define them regardless of if it was an assignment they had a hard time embracing or they were able to attain and maintain. How they define their purpose will determine how they define growth, success, and how they combat adversity.

Growth & Exposure

Athletes will embark on a journey of tailored development that empowers them to reach their fullest potential as basketball players. With a foundation built on hard work, passion, and dedication, they will unlock opportunities for success both on the court and in life. Players will acquire essential skills that will aid them in their pursuit of excellence in every facet of their journey.

Leadership & Legacy

Athletes will receive guidance from their teammates who occupy the same position, learning valuable strategies for success that they will then share with the next generation of players.

Family & Brotherhood

The depth of friendship varies, and as a team cultivates a sense of brotherhood, their connections deepen significantly. Within this family dynamic, players need to find brothers who serve as their safe haven, where they can confide in one another and rely on support during challenging times.

Run Your Race

Athletes often measure their success against that of their peers without recognizing the unique aspects of their own journey. Failing to acknowledge the distinctions of the race you are evaluating can lead to unnecessary challenges that can be avoided by clearly defining your race’s distance, your pace, and your vision of victory when the opportunity arises.

“When you have identified your race, understand your pace, and have defined your win, there is no need for comparisons that negatively affect your mindset and your journey.  Every race is different with different obstacles, embrace the race you know because you have the tools to win your race”

Personal Development

Being a successful athlete first starts with having a strong foundation in character, discipline, and a strong mindset that will endure the challenges of success, making the right decisions, and staying focused on the goals that will lead to achieving the sought after dreams. Being successful isn’t just about fulfilling your dreams but leaving a legacy that later generations will strive to achieve and pass.  The question is how hard will you make it for them to break the records you have set?

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I sprinting or is it more of a marathon…Know your race!

Before you decide what school you will go to and what the end of the road will look like for you, you must first understand and embrace your own race. Most players never ask or answer this question and by not acknowledging this question has hurt a lot of players careers because for to many players are trying to sprint when they should be embracing the long run. The sprint how quickly can you get to the NBA or your preferred destination. If you are projected as a one and done, you are on a sprint. If you are not getting any letters from colleges, you are looking at more of a marathon. There is nothing wrong with either race, but you cant run the race that is not meant for you. Rushing your development or rushing the money, can come with consequences. Make sure you do not hurt the long term for short term gains.

What is the first thing coaches notice when looking for players?

The first thing coaches notice is the body. It is just like when you see an attractive person walking. You do not notice their character or skill set first, you notice the physical gifts. You then hope they are more than good looks and that is the same way with coaches. Height, athleticism, and length will be the first things noticed but skill and IQ follow quickly behind to see if you know how to use the God given talent you have been blessed with.

What school should I choose?

Always go with the school that needs you.  Need is far different from want and shows that team is invested in you. You must also take into account if their style of basketball matches your style. If you love fast paced and the team recruiting you is slow, will it work? Do not get caught up with looks. Treat schools just like they treat you. Dig deeper and find out as much as you can and not get caught up in the looks of the school.

How do I extend my playing career?

This question first depends on where you are at in your basketball career. Are you in high school or are you on some level of college or are you a pro? Every level has to deal with some version of the Portal.  High School players who are three star or below will find it harder to earn a basketball scholarship because most programs are jumping into the Portal. High school players must have the body along with the skill set that will compete on the preferred level. If you are not able to get a D1 scholarship, weigh your options and opportunities and make the best decision best on development, opportunity and need.  This also applies to players who are in college. Sometimes extending your career means playing in a lower division and being the man as opposed to playing 10 to 15 minutes on a higher level. Regardless of what level you are on, production, consistency, and efficiency will extend your career as long as you are healthy and available. Take care of your body and make the most out of every opportunity you get.

How do I earn playing time?

Your intensity and effort can go a long way but you must also develop your skill and IQ. If you are an efficient player who can master the role the coach has for you AND can perform it better than the players in front you, you will put yourself in a place to earn playing time…

When you get that first minute of playing time earn the second and third minute by stringing together plays on both ends of the court.  I call them streaks. Streaks are your ability to affect the game even though you may not score. Can you disrupt the offense and can you make the offense more efficient? Win your race down the floor, cover up the mistakes of others, and making the right play are examples you can execute on every play. Make the coach find reasons he needs you in the game.

How do I get coaches to notice me?

See How do I earn playing time…

Do what others are not willing to do.  Pick up full court, yell don’t talk on defense. Lead while also being a great teammate. Give off a presence that makes coaches look further into you and as they do they realize they need you. There are 15 full ride D1 scholarships, who cares if you are number 15. Find a way to get in the door, then let your hard work push you up the ladder. With all this being said, you have to have full game film to help sell your case. How many streaks in your games matter because without good game film, it will be tough to sell you are ready for that level.

Someone will have a great game during the game you play, the question is can you shine enough to get noticed when coaches are not even looking for you.

NIL and Social Media

Getting NIL deals is predicated on not only how well you play but how many followers you have on social media. Understanding how to leverage your social media early will put you in a better negotiation process if you show you can help influence people.
