FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT ARE the stages of offense?

Short answer…there is transition, plays, and after the play concepts that need to be the foundation of your offense.  All three of these concepts are interconnected although you may not use all three based on each possession.  The focus should be to score early in the clock, this means you will not always run plays.  If a play is not being ran, an unpredictable or adjustable motion should be ran to keep the defense guessing and concepts should be established for when plays break down or in late clock situations.  Shot clock break down is predicated on the shot clock time.  Normally it is 30 or 24 seconds.   You must also account for special situations like out of bounds plays, free throw opportunities and late game scenarios.

The goal of an efficient offense is to make sure your team can make the appropriate read and score whether you are running a play or running motion at any point of the clock.

what do i focus on more in practice, offense or defense?

Tough question, but the answer depends on what you as a coach want to emphasize, the time of year, and the scoring ability, intelligence, or experience of your team. If you lack offensive players and need to generate offense through defense, I recommend prioritizing defense, while also remembering that practicing offense will enhance your team’s overall performance. You can’t neglect either aspect, but teaching offense can be more challenging than teaching defense. Therefore, it would be wise to emphasize offensive skills during the off-season, ensuring your players become comfortable making the right reads, while also perfecting core defensive concepts.

how does practice plans change based on where you are at in the season?

Out of season Unit Plans are easier to prepare because they focus more on development than execution. During this time, failure is acceptable, but the main goal is to build confidence for competition. When the season begins, it is crucial to have Unit Plans tailored to different phases of the season, guiding you in creating practice plans that reflect the team’s strengths and weaknesses. As a coach, establishing checkpoints throughout the season is essential for evaluating the team’s progress and determining their growth compared to previous years. This philosophy is shaped through meticulous notes and assessments, revisited annually to grasp the distinct characteristics of each team, influenced by their style of play, skill level, and experience.

why should i take notes?
Having a solid grasp of how your team can secure success is essential. Taking notes allows you to uncover insights that may have eluded you during practice. By recording your observations and gathering input from your coaches, you can gain diverse viewpoints on the effectiveness of each training session while pinpointing areas that need enhancement. This valuable information not only aids in strategizing for upcoming practices but also serves as a critical tool for assessing the team’s growth in the years to come.
european or us concepts, which is better for my team?

In basketball, both European and US strategies play a vital role. European teams emphasize ball movement to offset their relatively lower athleticism, creating offensive opportunities, while US teams often lean toward isolation plays that enable individual players to exploit matchups. The challenge lies in finding the right balance for the offense. If your team lacks isolation players, effective ball movement becomes crucial to outpace the defense. On the other hand, when working with isolation players, the focus shifts to generating movement and making the right reads. Ultimately, as long as every player feels useful and remains engaged in the offense, the goal will be accomplished: to foster an efficient offense.

how do i incorporate player development to help improve the offense?

First, determine the essential skills required for each position to thrive. Next, design workouts tailored to meet the developmental needs of the player, enabling them to excel in their designated roles. This process begins with individual and group workouts, evolves into competitive drills, and ultimately culminates in 5v5 gameplay.

what is more important, winning or developing culture?

The question is, can you do both at the same time.  You need talented players and you need a culture that will establish and maintain what winning looks like while on and off the court. What can your coaching staff handle and what can your team handle?  Are you willing to take chances because you know you are equipped for the challenge based on the established character of the team and coaches? Are you able to find and or develop the players needed without sacrificing the culture?

why is playing zone defense more important now than in the past?

Modern offenses have become significantly more tactical in their pursuit of offensive advantages than in the past. Today’s players are not only more athletic but also possess enhanced skills, allowing them to capitalize on even the slightest openings to execute precise passes that lead to easy buckets or take accurate shots. As a result, certain zone defenses have the ability to stay ahead of the ball, effectively reducing offensive advantages that screening and pick-and-roll strategies provide. Current defensive approaches often utilize match-up zones that may allow for skip passes but are effective at eliminating offensive advantages that lead to easy scoring opportunities.

how do you coach tough

Coaching tough begins with establishing a strong relationship rooted in love; players must feel that you are fully invested in their success and development. Once clear goals and plans are set, accountability becomes essential. If a player genuinely desires accountability and you know how to communicate effectively with them, you can coach them tough. Remember, the concept of tough varies from one player to another, and as a coach, it is crucial to recognize how to challenge each player without losing them in the process.
